My Foreign God

Intro:

Acts 17:16-34

Vying for my attention…

Point: As children and heirs of the one true God, we must continually guard our hearts and minds against anything that would try to take His rightful place there.

v.18 “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”

I.City full of Idols v.16

      • Idol - something that takes God’s place in our life (takes attention off of Him and takes worship away from Him)

II.Paul’s Spirit was Troubled v.16

III.He Reasoned with them v.17

        • Religious people in the Synagogue (Jews and God fearing gentiles)
        • Anyone who would listen in the Marketplace

IV.A Preacher of Foreign Gods v18

      • Good news about Jesus and the Resurrection

V. “What you say sounds strange to us” v20

VI. You are Religious… I was observing objects of your worship”

4 Questions to help identify idols

            • Does it affect you emotionally?
            • Do you prioritize it?
            • Does it cause you or tempt you to sin?
            • Does it hinder your relationship with God?
